OAKLAND’S OWN, NUG, NEWEST DISPENSARY IN THE TOWN
OAKLAND, CA MAY 4 – The Nation’s first Asian-owned Social Equity Cannabis dispensary is opening its doors in the heart of Downtown Oakland, the city that piloted the original social justice program in 2017. After 4 years, pivotal late night City Council meetings, Federal obstacles, countless inspections, best-in-class retail build-out, and launching during a Global Pandemic NUG is proud to now be serving their hometown community; they are Oakland proud.
NUG’s Oakland dispensary will have it’s official Grand Opening on Saturday, May 8th, fittingly considered the luckiest of numbers in Chinese culture as it sounds like “fa” meaning fortune and prosperity. Everyone is invited to join. The day will feature Oakland’s own Vegan Mob and Churros Mexicanos food trucks, Lion Dance performance, and a ceremonial ribbon cutting at 1pm.
Ky Hang, Operator of OakLyfe Equity Group and General Manager of NUG Oakland is first-generation Chinese American and life-long Oakland resident and businessman. “My focus is to only put in my best- you get out what you put in, and that’s what everyone deserves, the City of Oakland, the Cannabis, Social Equity, LGBTQ, POC, and Asian communities. We all take pride in the work we do here and how it shapes the greater good. We represent several communities here at NUG; I want us to do right by all of them.” NUG Oakland has provided 10 full-time positions to Oakland residents and carries other Oakland Equity Brands such as Dakota West Coast.
The recent violence and hate crimes targeted at Asian American’s has injected a new set of concerns for this first time business owner. “Our location is at 1600 Broadway, Chinatown is just a few blocks over, this makes me excited, but now it also has me looking over my shoulder.” NUG has conducted community outreach to the Chinese community of Oakland, a population of 64,954, to help break down culturals stigmas on Cannabis. They are in support and will join in the festivities of the Grand Opening. NUG’s mission since 2009 has been to normalize the Cannabis experience.
Join NUG’s Oakland dispensary Grand Opening Saturday, May 8th at 1 pm, 1600 Broadway, Oakland, CA. Open to the public daily from 9:00 am-9:45 pm, no purchase necessary. NUG Retail locations are licensed as Adult-Use for customers age 21 and over, as well as Medical patients age 18 and over.

In the Spring of 2017, the City Council enacted an Equity Permit Program that addresses disparities in the Cannabis industry by prioritizing Oakland’s victims of the war on drugs, and minimizing unjust barriers of entry into the industry.
